Welcome to Payback support. We're here to help you understand and use
your consumer insights app.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Payback?
Payback is a privacy-first mobile app that analyzes your Google
Takeout and Meta (Facebook/Instagram) export data to generate consumer
personas and behavioral insights. All processing happens locally on
your device.
How do I get my Google Takeout data?
1. Visit
takeout.google.com
2. Select the data you want to export (YouTube, Chrome, etc.)
3. Choose "Send download link via email"
4. Upload the ZIP file to your Google Drive
5. Access it from Payback
How do I export my Meta (Facebook/Instagram) data?
1. Go to your Facebook/Instagram Settings → Privacy → Download Your
Information
2. Select JSON format
3. Download the archive
4. Upload the extracted folder structure to Google Drive
5. Access it from Payback
Is my data stored on your servers?
No. All data processing happens locally on your
device. We do not collect, store, or have access to your personal
data. When you use Instant Analysis, behavioral signals are sent to
Google Gemini AI to generate your persona, but we don't store any of it
on our servers.
What does "Quick Analysis" do?
Quick Analysis intelligently selects 10-15 high-value files from your
export (searches, watch history, ad interactions, etc.) and analyzes
them instead of processing your entire archive. This provides fast,
actionable insights while preserving battery life.
How does AI analysis work?
When you run Instant Analysis, the app extracts behavioral signals from
your Gmail and Calendar data (on-device), then sends these signals to
Google Gemini AI via our secure backend to generate your persona. AI
only runs when you initiate Instant Analysis. You can view and delete
your persona results at any time in Settings.
What are the 135 categories?
Payback analyzes your data against 135 unified behavioral categories
across 10 pillars: Demographics, Interests, Shopping, Media,
Technology, Lifestyle, Values, Life Events, Financial, and Travel.
These are industry-standard targeting categories used by advertisers.
How do I delete my data?
Go to Settings → Data Management → "Delete All Data". This permanently
removes all analysis results from your device. You can also delete
individual analyses. Uninstalling the app also removes all local data.
Why can't the app access my Google data?
Ensure you've granted Payback read-only access to your Google Drive,
Gmail, and Calendar during OAuth login. Check your
Google Account Permissions
to verify Payback is authorized. You may need to re-authenticate in
the app.
The app crashed during analysis. What should I do?
Payback includes a checkpoint system that saves progress every 10
files. Restart the app and resume analysis from Settings. If crashes
persist, contact support with your device model and iOS version.
Can I share my persona with others?
Currently, Payback doesn't have built-in sharing. You can take
screenshots of your persona and insights to share manually. We may add
export functionality in future versions.
What Gmail data does Payback access?
Payback accesses Gmail metadata only: sender addresses, subject lines,
dates, and labels. Message content is never accessed or
stored. All Gmail analysis happens locally on your device to
identify behavioral patterns (shopping habits, travel preferences, etc.).
What Calendar data does Payback analyze?
Payback analyzes calendar event metadata: event titles, times,
locations, and attendees. This helps identify lifestyle patterns,
professional activities, and interests. All analysis is performed
on-device and your calendar data never leaves your phone.
How accurate are the insights?
Accuracy depends on the completeness and quality of your export data.
Payback uses AI (Google Gemini 2.5 Flash) to approximate behavioral
categories, which may not be 100% accurate. Insights are for
informational purposes only.
